581 higuera mixed use
> Award of Merit, American Institute of Architects Central Coast, 2016
581 Higuera is a mixed-use building in downtown San Luis Obispo with approximately 24 residential units over ground-level retail and below-grade parking. In addition, the project will include a publicly accessible rooftop terrace and restaurant, with stunning views of downtown and the surrounding hills.
The architecture recalls the materials and massing of a traditional brick warehouse building present around the turn of the century, while providing contemporary gestures and details at select locations. The project celebrates historic forms while maintaining consideration of modern day building techniques, technologies, and uses.
This infill project works together with two new adjacent buildings, which are a part of a larger downtown “campus”. When completed, this development will provide much needed housing for young and middle income families, while revitalizing some very underdeveloped lots at the south end of downtown.
