Nativity of our Lady Atrium Addition

Originally built in 1961 as a single-building school, the facility underwent several remodels and expansions after the Nativity of our Lady Catholic Community moved into the building, including the addition of a parish office and a second-story rectory. However, the building still lacked a proper entrance with the sanctuary - converted from the schools multi-purpose room - opening directly to the outdoors and the office disconnected from the main interior.

This project introduced a 900-SF atrium in the tradition of early Christian churches, providing a welcoming entrance for parishioners to gather before proceeding into the sanctuary. The focal point of the space is a cascading baptismal font, with moving water representing the Holy Spirit's presence and spiritual nourishment. Three illuminated ambry cabinets storing holy oils support to support baptismal rites held in the room.

Exterior improvements include a dramatic 28-foot steeple featuring the Nativity of Our Lady star crafted from art glass on all four sides. The star is lit at night and filters refracted light during the day, changing as the sun moves. Below the steeple is a labyrinth offering a space for walking mediation and prayer, further enriching the spiritual experience for the community.

Overall, this project not only improved the functionality and aesthetics of the building but also created a sacred space that fosters connection and contemplation within the parish.
